10 ifungis in the exhibition

The International Club in the Foreign Office e.V., Berlin in cooperation with the galerie probst

presents  from November 10, 2022 to February 15, 2023

the exhibition

”beacon” by GAMA

In addition to the analogue painting by the artist GAMA, 10 of his digitally hand-drawn ifungi NFTs are also available as digital prints on 50 x 50 cm canvas.

“Like the signal of a beacon that draws his attention, the artist illuminates the basic themes of our time in his works without losing the sense of optimism, lightness and magic. In doing so, he sends a signal against the misconception that we humans make nature our subjects – we could squeeze nature into a “room with wooden floorboards” (exhibition photo: beacon). But nature teaches us painfully that this – born of human hubris – is a delusion."

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is a subspecies of leopard formerly native to northeastern China, northern Korea, and the southwestern Russian region of Primorye. Since 1996, the Amur leopard has been on the IUNC red list. In 2007, there were only 14-20 adults and 5-6 cubs left in the wild. Outside Russia, the species was extinct. Through efforts of animal conservationists and following the designation of large protected areas in Russia, the Amur leopard population has since recovered somewhat. As of mid-2015, the population in Russia and China was estimated at 86 wild specimens. This means that the population of the Amur leopard in the wild has more than quadrupled since 2007.

The fur of the snow leopard has been used for centuries as clothing, wall hangings or trophies. Even today, the skull bones, teeth, claws as well as the genitals of the animals are traded. The body parts are also used in ritual ceremonies in parts of China. In addition, its habitat in the high altitudes of the Himalayas is highly endangered. Human encroachment into ever higher elevations is reducing its migratory range.

Our oceans are sinking more and more into garbage. Today, several hundred thousand pieces of microplastic and plastic waste float in every square kilometer of ocean. Sea turtles, like the real hawksbill turtle pictured in the mushroom head, have been found with plastic straws in their noses. In the Pacific alone, there are plastic whirlpools four times larger than Germany.

Tigers have been in high demand for use in Traditional Asian Medicine, especially in China, for more than 1,000 years. Healing powers are attributed to nearly all parts of the body. Even though worldwide bans on hunting, trade and use should better protect tiger populations, superstition about their healing powers lives on. High prices on the international and especially Asian black markets entice poachers to hunt tigers. The black market price in China for a kilogram of tiger bone in 2005/06 was over $6,500 per kilogram. In addition, the skins of the rare Amur tigers are highly sought after as prestige objects by wealthy Russians, who pay US$10-20,000 for them, depending on size. The poacher gangs are in most cases mafia-like organized.

This mushroom shows an oil slick on the water. Oil pollution of the oceans is one of the most conspicuous forms of environmental damage in the sea. Oil enters the water not only as a result of spectacular accidents involving tankers or on drilling platforms, but above all from diffuse sources - from leaks during oil production, from illegal ship tank cleaning at sea or via rivers. Measures such as the designation of marine protected areas, increased controls or the use of double-hulled tankers are now being used to try to contain oil pollution.

The mushroom stem represents the highly endangered pangolins, which are currently one of the most illegally traded species in the world. There is a high demand for the animals, especially in the Asian market. The scales consist largely of keratin, like our finger and toenails, and are used in traditional Chinese medicine, among other things.

The orangutan mushroom head illustrates another endangered species on the Red List.

The lamellae show desert dunes, which indicate the "desolation" in many parts of the world. The background bears the name of the desert city of Tel Aviv. Israel has managed throughconsistent reforestation in Negev, to stop the spread of the desert and created forest areas.

In this rough mushroom hat, the issue around rhinos is addressed. Their horns are traded like a drug and are the reason why the animals are poached and threatened. The horn is said tohave a healing effect and is also a social status symbol.

The lamellae refer to (waste) water, which comes daily in excess from private households, trades and industry and must then be cleaned at great expense. Many people in the world haveless than 10 liters of water per day at their disposal. This quantity is needed with us already, in order to flush the toilet.

The stem stands for ivory and the illegal hunting of elephants associated with it.

The different background colors of the mushrooms have city names. Thus, this one stands for the city of Monaco.

The ever faster growing cities, with their enormous consumption of resources, present mankind with a gigantic problem. The lamellae indicate the water pollution in the metropolises. Many of the megacities have no functioning sewage system. Therefore, the dirty water flows untreated into the environment. The enormous CO2 emission, by traffic, air conditioning, etc. of these cities has a large share in the melting of the poles.

This mushroom indicates the greatest civilian nuclear disaster. The black background calledafter Chernobyl and the slats depict the warning sign of radioactivity. No mushroom can bemore topical.

Both the golden head and the golden stem, are meant to draw attention to the environmental disturbance caused by gold mining. Large-scale industrial gold mining uses the cyanideleaching process, which is extremely harmful to the environment. The mercury process isoften used by small-scale miners.

Beacons show seafaring the way and warn them of dangers. Thus, this mushroom should warn against further clearing and destruction of the rainforest. Every year, 158,000 square kilometers of tropical rainforest are cleared for timber, paper, conversion into oil palm or soy plantations, cattle pastures or for the exploitation of mineral resources such as iron ore, gold, oil or gas or for the construction of large dams. Through deforestation, irretrievable forest is lost, in some cases containing centuries-old construction giants. With every tree that disappears, many animal species also disappear.
